Why are People Physically Inactive in Society?
Many things have changed over these past few years, with the fast-growing technology that we have, more and more people are becoming physically inactive.
Sometimes I wonder why aren't people physically active or why people don't do enough, so here are some of the most popular reasons people give for not being active:
“I don’t have time.”
Australians say that a lack of time is the number one reason they are not physically active, when in fact, we have a lot more time than our grandparents. The difference is how we use our time. Watching TV is Australia’s most popular leisure activity. According to the survey the ABS completed in 2012, the average viewing time for Australians over the age of 2 was almost 16 hours per week.
“I don’t have the energy or motivation.”
The second most popular reason for inactivity is that Australians think it is “too hard” and that physical activity requires too much effort and energy. Some people may have the idea that being active means that you need to go to the gym, join an exercise class, or that you have to work so hard that you sweat and get out of breath.
Another reason is that many people have jobs that require them to sit for much of the day. Seeing as half the year is cold, it is harder to exercise, especially
during winter. It may be too cold to walk or bike to work and school, run errands, or just enjoy an evening stroll.
